Statement: John Larkins

Stepping Down but Not Away

The Aberfeldie Sports Club would like to inform our members, supporters, families and the wider EDFL community that our esteemed President of the Senior Football Section Aberfeldie Sports Club (ASC), John Larkins, has decided to finally stand down from the role.

John (JL) has been President of the Senior Football Section Aberfeldie Sports Club (ASC) for over 20 years and was also Aberfeldie Sports Club Chairman for 6 years.

John Larkins contribution and dedication to the Aberfeldie Sports Club is without equal and Abers would not be the successful club it is today without the influence and hard work that JL has provided over so many years.

JL is well respected within the EDFL Community and has always had the best interest of the competition at heart. He has been awarded life membership of the Aberfeldie Sports Club, the EDFL and has also been recognised by Moonee Valley Council in 2008 with “The Spirit of Moonee Valley Award” for his services to local sport and the local community.

John will continue as an ex officio member of the Aberfeldie Sports Club Board and will be the ASC appointed Delegate on EDFL matters.

Whilst the Aberfeldie Sports Club are poorer from the loss of John as Senior Football President, we are extremely fortunate to have had John’s undying commitment over so many years.

We would also like to recognise Johns wife, Gail Larkins (also an ASC Life Member), who has been so supportive of JL while being actively involved in various committees and working groups during their journey.

We will be arranging a function in the new year to show our gratitude and thanks for the contribution John and Gail have made to the Aberfeldie Sports Club. (details to follow)

East Brunswick Hotel and Primrose & Vine Join the Abers Family

The Aberfeldie Sports Club is thrilled to announce that the East Brunswick Hotel and Primrose & Vine wine store have joined the Abers family, generously throwing their support behind the club to become official partners.

We look forward to working with both the East Brunswick Hotel and Primrose & Vine to deliver fantastic value to our players, members and the wider community, and can’t wait to see the great people of Abers supporting our new partners as only they can to recognise their terrific show of faith.

About the East Brunswick Hotel

Since the 1880’s The East in all its forms has been a favourite of Brunswick locals. After a break, the Lygon Street beauty has been lovingly and painstakingly patched, fixed and restored with more than a nod to its rock and roll past.

Whilst the band room has gone, the Hotel now comprises 12 boutique style serviced apartments, public bar, private cellar dining room and upstairs cocktail bar and balcony.

Our public bar is the heart and soul of our operation and during it’s days as the East Brunswick Club, it played host to some of the best-known Australian and international rock music acts in the business.

As part of the venue’s massive renovation, we’ve tried to retain the original features of the hotel where possible. This space is open 7-days per week for lunch and dinner, but is available for private function bookings, subject to availability and budget.

Premier Division Match Report – Aberfeldie v Greenvale

Aberfeldie overcame a sluggish start in their EDFL Premier Division clash against traditional rivals Greenvale on Saturday afternoon, with a 22-point victory the sides seventh on the bounce and enough to keep the pressure on Keilor at the top of the table.

On a grey Saturday afternoon amongst the gumtrees at Section Road, the Jets were dealt a blow at the selection table as star trio Nat Caruso, Adam & Nick Maric were all ruled out, though it didn’t stop the home side controlling the early running with early goals to Josh Smith and Ryan Mills the only scoring action of an incredibly cagey opening term.

With an old-fashioned bog running through the centre of the ground (the sort of conditions that make mothers cringe whenever the white shorts are out), it took until 8 minutes into the second term for Abers to make an impact on the scoreboard when Jack Binns got on the end of a dinky ball from Jean-Luc Velassaris and kicked truly from 45m out to break the shackles.

After a frustrating opening half an hour that is unlikely to feature on any end of season highlight reels, Velassaris was the man who ignited the turnaround for the two-blues, putting on a dominant display through the middle of the ground that sparked his side and saw Abers kick five unanswered goals in the second term to create a 20-point buffer at the main change.

The Jets came out hard after half-time as former Essendon VFL star Jacob Thompson booted three playing as a traditional full-forward for the hosts, but Abers had all the answers as Jayden Foster, Sam Cattapan & James Peters kicked their second majors of the game towards the Somerton Road end to stem the tide.

The two-blues turned for home with a four-goal lead, and despite Greenvale registering majors via Thompson and Dempsey early in the final term, the reigning premiers were never headed as Pound, Binns and Peters again steadied the ship, with the side running out 22-point victors on the day.

The result capped off a good day for the club after Tom Pound kicked 8 goals in the U19’s 119-point victory, the Reserves tightened their grip on top spot by saluting in what was a classic “8-point game,” and the clubs two netball sides secured their finals spot in the last home and away round of the year.

The Women’s Premier Division side head to Pascoe Vale tomorrow afternoon before a big weekend at Clifton Park next Saturday as our boy’s face Doutta Stars.

Final Score:

Aberfeldie 10. 6 (66)

Greenvale 13.10 (88)

4 J. Peters, 3 J. Foster, 2 J. Binns, 2 S. Cattapan, J. Arceri, J. Pound
